Rona Island
Rona Island is the second largest island in Lake Manapouri. At 60 hectares it is only a quarter the size of Pomona Island. Our baseline ecological research suggests, however, that the vegetation on Rona Island is in much better condition than that on near-by Pomona Island. This is because there are fewer pests on Rona Island, with little or no evidence of either possum or deer.
Eradicating pests on both Pomona and Rona Islands simultaneously is a cost effective approach to the islands' restoration and having two island refuges close together acts as an insurance policy for species native to Fiordland. In the unlikely event that one of the islands suffered a re-invasion of pests the flora and fauna on the other is still safe and can be used to re-populate the other island if needed.
