News Update - October 2006

The weather has played havoc with our plans over the last few weeks. Heavy rain and high winds have resulted in the postponement of some working parties so our apologies to those willing volunteers who were affected. Once the weather calmed down the traps on Pomona were checked again and a further 32 rats were caught. We have now caught a total of 50 pests in our traps.

Work also started on the mainland to the north of Pomona Island across from Hurricane Passage. A total of 24 trap sites have been located along 2km of track. The trapping on the mainland is more intense than on Pomona  to reduce the risk of stoats and rats swimming across to the island.

Volunteers have now put in
nearly 1000 hours on Pomona Island and the adjacent mainland. This is a great achievement and our thanks go to everyone who has helped out.

A special thanks go to the following individuals who have each attended more than 5 working bees: Viv Shaw, Chris Shaw, John Whitehead, Hunter Shaw, Ian Thorne, Megan Willans and Kim Hollows.

In September the Southland Times ran a great feature on the work of the Trust and the text of the article can be found at:

The 'buy a stoat trap' scheme has been successful, but there are still some traps left, so please get in touch if you'd like to contribute to the work of the Trust.

Sadly, two of our founding Trustees resigned in September due to other commitments. Our thanks go to Ruth Dalley and Michael Bednar for their hard work as Treasurer and Acting Treasurer
. However, we welcome two new Trustees - Hunter Shaw and John (Bounce) Stevenson. Both Hunter and Bounce have volunteered their time on Pomona. Hunter will help coordinate the deer eradication programme and Bounce will be our new Treasurer.
